Creating Community can happen anywhere, even in a work place. It is a place where we respect, cooperate, share, communicate effectively and learn together.
During many of the trainings and retreats I have attended in my life I had to learn how to be part of a community. Even though I came from a family of 7 and we learned how to share time, space and chores it was quite different when you were with strangers. One must be considerate and aware while respecting the ways of others without judgement. Learning how to communicate effectively and from your heart can change the outcome of any situation and make life more cohesive. Much is in our approach, in our voice and mannerisms. We can be in community together even with differences of ideas and opinions. Actually, that can make us grow more, learn more and see the perspective of others if we learn to listen and see from our heart.
This last weekend I was part of a Board Meeting for a non profit "Massage Without Borders", of which I am the executive director. I decided to have our meeting in a lovely location in Virginia, far away from the average stresses of the world, in a lovely rental home. Together with the Board Secretary we set out to create this 'family' style board meeting. We cooked together,we laughed together, we got to 'know' each other personally "before business".
All of this not only taught me about each individual, it showed all of us we can be personable, human, friendly and still accomplish so much professionally.
Imagine a world where we could respect each other. Imagine listening and learning from others even though our belief system may differ. I believe for myself personally this has become easier because of the peace I have within. I've grown as an individual and found happiness in who I am. I am no longer threatened by what someone might think of me because I am different. I can care for others whether in my classes, business , family or friends in a kind way. I don't have to prove anything to anyone or get defensive. I believe and feel that my life path has shown me the inner strength I need to create community life no matter where I am.
It was such a great joy to hear one of our board members says she was pleased that everyone listened and valued her opinion. She didn't feel like a big corporate structure was going to knock her down for her ideas and thoughts. We supported her. We learned from her. We shared together how things could work and come to conclusions and solutions together and we laughed plenty!
Another young board member seemed surprised when I put the power in her hands to create her ideas and suggestions, to start a project that would come from her heart. If she needed guidance we would be there. If she needed help, all she has to do is ask. To watch her smile and change her posture and become "empowered" is a gift to witness.
Respect goes a long way when creating communities. Empowering individuals is necessary as everyone has a gift to share. Let us celebrate the creativity! Have faith in your community.
The elders of the board opened to new concepts and ideas that the younger ones shared, including social media ideas that may have pushed us out of our box. We listened, we laughed, we learned. I, personally, was glad they could take on this newer technology with excitement and reach a younger community, the future of our mission. They helped other board members who lacked (or feared) some technology skills and found the time and patience to guide them through these lessons. The younger board members appreciated the respect of the elders and their strength, passion and commitment to support.
When the community has the passion to work together and loves what they are doing there is no negativity. There is Hope! There is Love! There is Balance on the journey!
Believe you can do it! Create the prosperity in your community! Value each other! Collaborate and cooperate! The balance and harmony will flow and miracles can happen easily!
Blessings on your journey ~ Gloria
